REDUCED from $125.00 | Rare Vintage Iris Barna Studio Pottery Ashtray with Native American Design Motif - Southwestern US, from the 1960s. In china cabinet quality, no stains, cracks, chips, or scratches. A perfect vintage piece of Southwestern U.S. Pottery made by Iris Barna.
Iris Barna was a blonde German-born potter who worked as a potter in the Santa Fe, Tesuque area of New Mexico in the 50's, 60's and 70's. She worked only with native New Mexico clays from Cerro Gordo, Tijeras, Cerrillos and La Bajada. Her stoneware reveals the effects of combined low-firing earthenware clay, such as that dug from La Bajada, overlaying the higher-firing stoneware shale clay from Cerro Gordo. She kept a studio on Cerillos Road where she held classes in all types of pottery making. About teaching she said, “I teach basic and fundamental techniques and try to inspire my students to develop ideas and individuality. A teacher of anything fails if he produces mere imitators of his own work.” Her studio pottery is indeed unique.
Barna passed away in 2007, her pottery is sought out by collectors for it's high quality finishes and unique native american designs.
Another fine vintage item from Steamcrunk.
