1950s Five Czechoslovakian pressed glass salt cellars - in used but not abused condition. Czechoslovakian made pressed glass. Classic look for your table setting.
Salt cellars were used prior to the invention of salt and pepper shakers. A small bowl with salt was placed at each place setting. A larger master salt cellar was left in the center of the table. People who didn't receive a salt cellar at their place setting was considered, "below the salt."
At that time the nobility sat at the 'high table' and their commoner servants at lower trestle tables. Salt was placed in the centre of the high table and only those of rank had access to it. Those less favoured on the lower tables were below (or beneath) the salt.
Great for a fancy dinner party, start your salt cellar collection today with these lovely examples.
Another fine vintage item from Steamcrunk.
